get-ahead

How do you get ahead financially?

Key ingredients for success

A whole lot of hope that everything will be alright and work out in the end? Perhaps a large dose of luck? I hate to break it to you, but no, hope is not a strategy and the odds of winning Powerball are 1 in 76 million.

The good news is that getting ahead finically is not that hard. Planning, discipline and accountability are the key ingredients for a recipe for success. Talem Wealth has over 21 years’ experience in helping clients get ahead financially. Like any good recipe, one needs the right ingredients but also, the right approach and method.

Planning
My dad (who started our business over 20 years ago) always used to ask prospective clients “When you have to drive somewhere you have never been before, what is the first thing you do?” After a few puzzled looks and guesses, he would answer “You get the Gregory’s out and figure out the route to take”. This generally led to more puzzled looks as no one in recent memory has ever used a ‘Gregory’s’ (today’s equivalent would be Google Maps or similar in case you are still stumped). But his point was valid – if you don’t know where you are going or how to get there, then you need to figure out a plan and path to follow. The same is true for sorting out your finances and getting ahead to work towards your desired outcome.
Think about anything major you’ve ever set out to achieve in life and then think about whether you have ever been successful by just winging it and making it up as you go or whether you sat down and mapped out the steps you need to take to get there. Let me tell you, improving your financial position and achieving future security are among the most major things you will ever need to figure out and if you get it right, the benefits flow into so many other aspects of your life and also, those of your loved ones. Financial plans should reduce your stress, bolster one’s confidence and make life a whole lot more enjoyable.

Discipline
I am not going to sugar coat it. It is not as simple as making a plan and saying, “I am still going to buy everything I want” and ‘yes’ to every experience and opportunity. Unfortunately, money is a finite resource so you will need to prioritise your needs and wants in the context of what you want to achieve. It is important to acknowledge that this is different for everyone. For some, there are non-negotiables now for which they are willing to trade off for more substantial future gains. Conversely, others have bigger future goals that are important enough for them to commit to forgo some of life’s little luxuries in the short term, knowing that they will be rewarded further down the track.

One thing I can assure you is that whatever your situation and immediate priorities are, is that with a tailored plan and some discipline, you will find be surprised by how much you can achieve whilst still enjoying life along the way. The sooner you start, the easier the process is and the more you can aspire to, without having to make as many compromises along the way.

Accountability
I believe this is the most crucial element. I think back to various times in my life when I have set myself a goal (whether it be to lose some weight, go a month without alcohol or eat more healthily), and whenever I have announced that goal to someone else, I have found that the chances succeeding, increased significantly. It’s like when you get a gym membership – you are initially super motivated and go regularly and then slowly, this motivation starts to wane. However, if getting fit and in shape was a serious goal that you were fully committed to, you would also engage the services of a personal trainer knowing that this will help you stay focussed, inspired and much more likely to keep turning up and putting in the work required to succeed.
So think of me as your personal trainer for your finances. No matter what stage you are at in life, working together, I can help you improve your financial position.
